Velvet flower — rong hua — is a Chinese craft more than a thousand years old, worn at the Tang court and long favored at weddings: the name is a homophone of "prosperity." Not a bloom that fades, and not sewn cloth — mulberry silk floss is twisted onto fine brass wire, petal by petal, until the silk catches the light like velvet. In 2006 it was listed as intangible cultural heritage, and it is still made entirely by hand.

This handmade velvet flower hairpin is a single peach blossom with one white bud on a short spray, approx. 100 × 70 mm — light enough for thin hair or a half-up style. A single silkworm cocoon yields roughly a kilometre of silk thread, and it takes hours of winding even for a bloom this small. Every petal is shaped by hand, so size and posture vary slightly from piece to piece.

FAQ

How long will my piece take to ship?

Preparation: 7–10 business days.

Estimated transit after dispatch: 8–12 business days.

Shipping policy

Will my piece look exactly like the photograph?

No two velvet flowers are identical. Each is shaped and dyed by hand, so color and form vary slightly — that variation is the signature of the maker's hand.

How should I care for my velvet flower?

Keep it dry and away from oil. Dust with a soft brush, store in a dry, ventilated place, and keep heavy things off it.
