Lacquer MOP Tissue Box · Burgundy Brown

This lacquer mother-of-pearl tissue box cover is made for daily use. The body is hollowed from solid wood, then coated coat after coat in natural raw lacquer — the sap of the lacquer tree, which gives only a few hundred grams a year per tree. In the old saying: a tapper walks a hundred li, cuts a thousand gashes, and gathers a single jin of lacquer.

Mother-of-pearl is worked two ways: diamond-shaped slivers set along the rim, and fine fragments scattered into the wet lacquer, then ground back flush beneath the finishing coats — a night sky of tiny stars under the surface. Each tissue box cover takes more than twenty coats of lacquer, each cured a full day before the next; grain and glow differ from box to box.

Keep out of direct sun and don't put anything hot straight onto the surface. Dust with a soft, dry cloth — no solvents, no chemical cleaners, no soaking. The lacquer will mellow slightly over the years; that's the material ageing, not failing.
