Mother-of-Pearl Comb · Moon Rabbit

This handmade mother of pearl comb begins with one block of purple sandalwood — a wood so dense it sinks in water — carved into a comb, then inlaid. Shell is sliced to under a millimetre and set into grooves carved to fit, ground flush with the wood so a fingertip finds no step; fine metal wire inlaid into its own channels draws the outlines of the design. From raw block to finished comb takes ten days or more. Shell and wood each take light their own way, so every comb differs slightly in figure and glow.

Never soak it, and keep it out of direct sun. Wipe with a soft cloth and give the wood a thin film of oil from time to time — a little goes a long way. Do not use chemical cleaners. Don't press the teeth sideways, and keep the shell away from hard knocks.
