Silk-Wrapped Flower Brooch · Wisteria

This silk-wrapped flower brooch uses chan hua, one of China's intangible cultural heritage crafts, often described as embroidery without cloth: silk thread is wound in one tight direction over a paper core until the core disappears. The winding leaves an edge no cloth flower can match — crisp lines, sharp folds. Once made for bridal ornaments and temple offerings, each piece still takes a full working day or more of winding. Because every petal is wound by hand over its paper core, size and posture vary slightly from piece to piece.

Keep it away from water above all: water softens the paper core, and once the petal loses its support it will not recover. If it catches damp, blot gently with a dry cotton swab. Avoid oils, perfume and knits or zips that can snag the thread. Move slowly when adjusting the shape — copper wire breaks if bent back and forth too often. Store flat in its own box with a small sachet of desiccant, and dust with a soft brush. Never wash or wipe with a wet cloth.
